Great action on display at 'Battle in the Ballroom' Eye wins title, Gilbert wins 3rd round TKO, and Park wins 3rd round TKO
May 9, 1:15 AM · Charles Indriolo - Cleveland Boxing Examiner Cleveland, Ohio -- Last night fans were treated to 13 bouts of exciting boxing action at “Battle in the Ballroom” held in the Slovenian National Ballroom. The event, hosted by Kincaid-Godhard Boxing Promotions and the West Side Boxing Club, had fans cheering throughout for some of Cleveland’s best amateur fighters. Preliminary Bouts...
The night started with a bang, as each of the first two fights ended in exciting stoppages. The opening bout saw Christian White (Terminator B.C.) defeat Daniel Caldera (Freddie’s B.C.) at 170-pounds. White was the aggressor and walked Caldera down throughout the fight, which gave the crowd some exciting action. Caldera’s corner retired in the second round following a barrage of punches from White.
Following that bout, Pat Brown (Downtown Y’town B.C.) defeated Christian Colon (Raul Torres B.C.) at 135-pounds. Brown landed some great right hooks throughout the fight, which left Colon bloodied. The fight was stopped in the second round, after the ringside physician stepped in and stopped it.
In the first female bout of the night, Eve Santiago (Health 360) took on Asia Smith (PAL/Thurgood B.C.) in a battle at 119-pounds. The tenacity of both fighters brought the crowd to their feet many times during the fight. But after the first round, Santiago began to take control by landing the cleaner shots. Santiago went on to win the fight by decision.

Then the crowd at the ballroom saw two fights in the 145-pound division. The first, pinned Rajiu Hernandez (Empire B.C.) against James Washington (Raul Torres B.C.). Washington, who had a substantial height advantage, was not able to stand the hard punching Hernandez. Hernandez scored standing 8-counts in the second and third rounds, before the ref stopped the fight.

After, Lucian Clinkscale (Downtown Y’town B.C.) dropped a close decision to Angel Figuerora (Freddie’s B.C.). The fight was well contested through two rounds, before Figuerora dominated in the third round, helping him earn the victory.
Main Card Bouts... After a short five minute break, action resumed with five Main Card bouts. In the first bout, John Kutitus (Raul Torres B.C.) won by decision against David Frum (Terminator B.C.) at 178-pounds. The fight was action-packed and could have gone either way. It was a great effort by both fighters.
Then in the second female bout of the night, Ashley Barnett (Old School B.C.) outpointed Carrie Fiol (PC Torres/Warren B.C.) at 135-pounds. The fight was another close bout that could have gone either way.
In a 185-pound slugfest, Abdul Omar (Good Shepherd B.C.) was stopped by Brandon Radiwiec (Freddie’s B.C.) in the third round. Both fighters were big and strong, but it was Radiwiec scoring a knockdown on Omar after a big right hook. Omar made it to his feet, before the referee stopped the bout.

Then in a bout at 165-pounds, 2010 Cleveland Golden Gloves runner-up Matt Brown (Terminator B.C.) lost a hard fought, close decision to Dequilla Smith (PAL/Thurgood B.C.). In a good competitive boxing match, each fighter showed excellent skill and scored on many of the punches thrown.
In the final Main Card bout, Latiss Norman (Cory Fight Club) was stopped by Brian Park (West Side B.C.) in the third round. Park, a former Cleveland Golden Glove champion, controlled the fight by scoring two standing 8-counts before the ref stopped it.

Feature Bouts... Then just after 10 PM the Feature bouts began. In the first of three bouts, Darren Rivera (Downtown Y’Town B.C.) took on Roher Canales (Raul Torres B.C.) in a battle at 180-pounds. Both fighters came out swinging, each scoring good shots. The crowd chanted throughout the fight and in one of the closest bouts of the night, Rivera won by a close decision.
In the second feature, Kenneth Brown (Cudell Rec.) took on former Cleveland Golden Glove champion Greg Gilbert (West Side B.C.) at 132-pounds. Brown came out extremely aggressive, putting Gilbert on the ground early in the first round. But Gilbert mounted a comeback in the second, landing numerous punches on the seemingly winded Brown. Brown and his corner retired after the second round, giving Gilbert the victory.

In the main event of the evening, Lauren Cooney (PAL/Thurgood) and Jessica Eye (Strong Style MMA) fought at 132-pounds for the Ohio Women’s Lightweight Championship. It was an exciting fight, as the MMA style of Eye and the boxing experience of Cooney made for a tremendous title bout. After three close rounds Jessica Eye was declared the winner by decision, to the roar of her loyal followers in the crowd. Jessica Eye is your new Ohio Women’s Lightweight champion.

‘Battle in the Ballroom’ was a fun night of amateur boxing action. Kincaid-Godhard Boxing Promotions put together quite the fight card, as each bout had something unique about it. It was tremendous matchmaking on their part. Be sure to attend Kincaid-Godhard Promotions’ next event in October 9.

Cleveland boxing returns this Saturday night at the Slovenian National Ballroom
May 3, 6:53 PM · Charles Indriolo - Cleveland Boxing Examiner This Saturday night, May 8, amateur boxing returns to the Slovenian National Ballroom in Cleveland for “Battle in the Ballroom.” The 10-plus bout event is being promoted locally by The West Side Boxing Club, in association with Kincaid-Godhard Promotions. The event will be the second this year for the Cleveland-based promotional company. Last January, they held the excellent “War at the Armory” card in Brook Park. Like that event, “Battle in the Ballroom” is sure to be a fun night watching some of the best amateur fighters in the area.
In the main event, 2008 Cleveland Golden Gloves champion, and fan favorite, Brian ‘The Korean Brawler’ Park (West Side B.C.) will take on Latiss Norman (Cory Fight Club) in a 152-pound match-up. In the co-feature, the best female lightweight in Ohio will be decided when Jessica Eye (Strong Style MMA) takes on Lauren Cooney (PAL/Thurgood) at 132-pounds. Eye, the reigning women’s National Amateur Mixed Martial Arts champion, is undefeated as a fighter. Lauren Cooney is an accomplished boxer, with many fights under her belt. Their fight is just one of three women’s bouts on the card.
In addition to the two feature bouts, “Battle in the Ballroom” will also showcase at least eight main card bouts.
At 119-pounds, female fighters Eve Santiago and Asia Smith (PAL/Thurgood) will square off. At 132-pounds, there are three fights on the card. Former Cleveland Golden Gloves champ Greg Gilbert (West Side B.C.) will take on 2010 CGG’s runner-up Kenneth Brown (Cudell Rec.). Nick Titschinger (Playland MMA) will square off against Christian Colon (Raul Torres B.C.). With Ashley Barnett taking on Carrie Fiol (Warren B.C.), in one of the three female bouts.
There will be two fights on the card at 165-pounds. 2010 CGG’s runner-up Matt Brown (Terminator B.C.) will take on 2010 CGG’s participant Dequilla Smith (PAL/Thurgood). The two men did not meet up in this year’s Gloves, so it could make for an interesting match-up. Also at 165-pounds, well experienced amateurs Kenny Brown (Empire B.C.) and Josh Kroesen (Warren B.C.) will square off.
At 185-pounds, Brandon Radiwied (Freddy’s B.C.) will fight Rohar Canales (Raul Torres B.C.), in one of two bouts in the weight class. The other will pin 2010 CGG’s participant David Frum (Terminator B.C.) against John Kutitus (Raul Torres B.C.)
Also at “Battle in the Ballroom” will be one preliminary high school bout, featuring Christian White (Terminator B.C.) taking on Daniel Caldera (Freddy’s B.C.) in a match-up of 170-pounders.
Only a limited amount of tickets remain for “Battle in the Ballroom”. Tickets start at just $15 and can be purchased through the Kincaid-Godhard Promotions box office a4 (440) 223 - 7409 or on-line at Proboxingohio.com.
The Slovenian National Ballroom is located at 6417 St. Claire Avenue in Cleveland. The event will provide free parking and adult refreshments for purchase. Fights start at 7:30 pm. Be sure to support Cleveland boxing this Saturday night at 'Battle in the Ballroom'. | |
