Venue: Slovenian Nat'l Ballroom

Deyah Darweesh & Shawn Edge Steal the Show at Battle in the Ballroom II

A standing room crowd turned out last night to take in 14 fights at the Slovenian National Ballroom. The entertaining night of boxing, billed as The Battle in the Ballroom II, featured 3 stoppages and 2 full out knockouts with many other fights on the card being very evenly matched. The exciting card was put on by Kincaid-Godhard Promotions in association with the West Side Boxing Club. The cards' top billing saw Deyah Darweesh knock off Golden Gloves champion Franklin Barnes. Darweesh, who fights for West Side Boxing Club, was in control throughout and was estatic after pulling off the upset of Barnes who hails from Westlake and trains at Cudell Rec Center.

Cleveland Boxing Club's Dave Stargen was the unlucky recipient to draw the physically imposing Edge who dominated the fight from the get-go. Edge landed solid shots in the opening round that led to a standing eight count and Stargen's legs never recovered from the opening blows. By the second round, Stargen was done as Edge took him to floor with a series of punches that dropped Stargen and ended the heavyweight novice bout. Edge seemed to earn a fan-club of sorts as fans flocked to get an autograph and pictures following the impressive display of punching power.

In the first featured bout on the main card, West Side Boxing Club scored a victory with Mike Adams' decision over Aaron Hawkins. A belt was on the line in the Light Heavyweight College bout and Lakeland's Adams looked like a more polished fighter than Purdue's Hawkins as he dictated the action for the well deserved win. In the other featured bout, Levi Patterson defeated Dan Crabtree in 152 pound open division. Crabtree hails from Columbus while Patterson resides in Shaker Heights and trains at Empire Boxing Club.

West Side Boxing Club was victorious in their first time in the ring during the card. Delonte Heath employed a defensive strategy where he was seldom hit and scored a decision over Empire Boxing Club's Chris Butler. Cleveland Boxing Club scored their second win of the evening as Jerrell Brown repeatedly landed solid blows against Columbus' Justin Matthews. The fight was stopped in the second round after a standing eight count.

Curtis Meister, who trains with United BT/King's Gym, won a decision over a game Will Hill in a 140 pound subnovice match. Meister did just enough the first two rounds to score the victory over the feisty Hill who had more gas in his tank in the final round of the three round bout.

The most closely contested fight of the evening was between Xavier Figueroa and Eddie Santos. Figueroa nearly pulled off a comeback but came up just short in a close descion. Both boxers, who fought at 150 pounds, came out bloodied after the bout. Santos trains for Raul Torres Boxing while Figueroa conditions at Cleveland Boxing Club.

Columbus fighter Eddie Yu scored a close win over West Side Boxing Club's Al Pugh. Yu took the first and third rounds while Pugh was impressive in the second round despite going home with the defeat.

One of the most dominating performance of the night came from Mike Van Dorn of Abba Gym in Bay City, Michigan. VanDorn floored Damen Pratzer, who resides in Cleveland Heights and trians at Michael J Zone Rec Center, within the first 10 seconds of the bout.VanDorn landed numerous punishing blows in the win that only took two minutes after the ref called the fight.

Jeremy Abram wore down Youngstown's Pat Brown in the 140 pound novice bout. Despite a deduction on the score card, Top Shelf BT/Kings Gym secured the victory with Abram over the Downtown Boxing Club of Youngstown.

Charles Paschal put on a impressive display in the subnovice division against Kaleen Knox. Knox dictated the action throughout with two standing eight counts before the fight was called a TKO by the referee in the second round. Paschal represents Cleveland Boxing Club while Knox trains at Royal Torres fights for Raul Torres Boxing.

Ibrahim Abdul'Haqq overcame a slow start against Devin Tomkins in the opening bout for a victory. Abdul'Haqq represents Cory Fight Club. Hopkins, who traveled from Bay City, Michigan, couldn't keep up with the quickness against the local fighter after taking the first round of the match.

Mark you calenders for May 14th as Kincaid-Godhard Promotions brings more live boxing to Slovenian Nat'l Ballroom with "BATTLE IN THE BALLROOM III". Once again, the top local amateur fighters from the area will be on display. For tickets and more information on the event, head over to www.wsboxingclub.com.
